A new name for New Zealand's two islands?
New Zealand has a problem! The names for the two islands (imaginatively entitled North and South) were never legally registered, and so the country is trying to decide what to call them. There are many suggestions already for this; click on the title for a link to a news article about the dilemma. My current favourite is from a Texan: Not Australia and Still Not Australia. Can you do better? Post your ideas here...

Indians race for the polls!

No, this story doesn't have anything to do with the Arctic or Antarctica but in fact India's 15th general election. Over 700 million people are entitled to vote in India and with so many votes to count, results will not be available until the 16th May. Watch this space for any updates. More info on the different regions within India can be found on the title link!

GeoTube
Just found out about GeoTube which as the name suggests is a collection of Geography videos. My personal favourite would have to be any of the 'Hottest place on Earth' series which have been recently televised on BBC1.Click on the title link to go to the website.
Update on L'Aquila earthquake

The images to the left show L'Aquila before and after the earthquake using Google Earth street view. Local officials have claimed that the death toll has risen to 250 people. This is the worst earthquake to have hit Italy in 30 years. There have been claims by angry Italian residents that not enough education on how to survive an earthquake is given by the government. The Telegraph newspaper reports, "Public anger was growing, with many people saying there had been impending signs of a large quake and they should have been warned to prepare for the worst."
"It's a scandal, what's happened," said Maria Francesco, of L'Aquila. "For the past three months there have been regular tremors, and they've been getting stronger and stronger."
Italy's national Geophysical Institute said 280 aftershocks had been recorded since the main quake at 3.32am local time on Monday morning.

Quaking in their boot!

An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale has struck L'Aquila, 60 miles from Rome, the capital city of Italy. Latest news reports are suggesting that 27 people have lost their lives. Powerful earthquakes are relatively rare in Italy but don't forget earthquakes of a magnitude of 6 and over can cause serious damage to buildings. For more information of this earthquake click on the title link.

8A1, 8A2 and 8C1 if you are leaving your Australia wildfire homework to the last minute, click on the title link; the news article provided by the The Guardian newspaper investigates whether there is a link between global warming and the bush fires. The image that is shown in this post is of an area called Kinglake, just one of many of the areas that were destroyed by the fires.

Taking your options in year 9 can be daunting, but where can Geography take you? There are 2 films here which highlight the many different careers Geography students can take.

Raging Inferno
The heat in Australia is just getting worse; described as “hell on earth”, Victoria is currently ablaze with 26 fires, including one with a 60-mile firefront.
Kevin Rudd, the Australian Prime Minister, toured the worst-affected areas, “Hell in all its fury has visited the good people of Victoria in the last 24 hours,” Mr Rudd said. “And many good people now lie dead.”
The death toll – which has been climbing by the hour – now stands at 76. There are fears it will rise as many people are still missing in the worst affected areas. Two children are among the dead and 18 people remain in critical condition in hospital with burns and other life-threatening injuries.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

A taste of some New York weather today? Essex has woken up to a blanket of snow, at least for a few hours, giving Year 10 students a chance to have a lie in before thinking about what they might need to pack next month!
Update Tuesday: the school remains closed and so we have postponed the information meeting for parents, scheduled for tonight. More information will be given when we return to school.

Nice weather?

Australia is suffering from its worst heatwave on record with temperatures hitting 43 degrees Celsius in the usually mild Melbourne.
Australian ministers are blaming global warming for the heatwave and more than 20 people have died in Adelaide to date. Australians are trying to combat the heatwave by various methods such as freezing their water bottles!

Less than two months to go and 16 Year 10 students, accompanied by Miss Hammond and Mr Knight, will be hitting the streets of the Big Apple! If you are one of the lucky ones, make sure you have given your ESTA and passport details to Miss Hammond and returned your reply slip about the parents' information meeting.
